MEMBER FIRM VACANCIES

Prisoners’ Advice Service: Community Care Caseworker and Locum Race Discrimination Caseworker

PAS is currently looking for both a full-time Community Care Caseworker, and a locum Race Discrimination Caseworker, the latter for a fixed term of twelve months (to cover a period of maternity leave).

Both roles will begin in August 2010.

PAS’s caseworkers assist prisoners via telephone advice (three days each week are designated ‘phone days’, when the PAS advice lines are open), letters, and occasionally in person. The Managing Solicitor at PAS supervises both posts, and both posts are self-servicing.

These roles both offer excellent opportunities for the right candidates, who will be able to take responsibility for and develop a full caseload. Knowledge of the main issues affecting prisoners would be an advantage. The entry pay level for each position will be circa £30K, including London weighting.

1. Community Care Caseworker

This legal caseworker/solicitor will specialise in housing, community care and mental health law, assisting prisoners who are soon to be released with regard to their rights regarding their resettlement into the community.

This role involves:

  • providing legal advice, representation and information to prisoners in England and Wales regarding their rights upon release;
  • liaising with governmental, non-governmental and professional organisations and individuals on behalf of such prisoners;
  • helping to develop the policy of the organisation with respect to resettlement casework;
  • contributing to the non-casework legal services PAS provides such as the quarterly bulletin, general advice line and pro bono queries.

2. Locum Race Discrimination Caseworker (12-month contract)

This role involves:

  • providing legal advice, representation and information to prisoners in England and Wales regarding their rights, particularly the application of the Prison Rules and the conditions of their incarceration, giving priority to prisoners who are suffering racial discrimination;
  • contributing to the non-casework legal services PAS provides such as the quarterly bulletin, general advice line and pro bono queries.

This role may be suitable for part-time working arrangements.

The closing date for applications for both posts is Thursday 15 April. Interviews will be held at the end of April.

Please send completed application forms (which may be downloaded via the link below) to Hywel Probert, Prisoners' Advice Service, PO Box 46199, London EC1M 4XA, or hywel.probert@prisonersadvice.org.uk.
