Discussion Topic: Equality Act, discrimination and prisoner’s rights (this is a re-run of the same topic held in Manchester in December 2011).

Guest speaker: Louise Curtis from the Equality Human Rights Commission.  This meeting will be chaired by Matthew Stanbury of GCN.  

Louise will provide an overview of discrimination issues facing prisoners, including areas ripe for challenge and any relevant caselaw.  Cases to be considered include issues such as religious discrimination (Bashir) and the unlawful distance learning policy at HMP Wakefield.  We will also invite contributions from practitioners experienced in obtaining funding for these sorts of cases and discuss tactics in this respect.
